GB: Oh, it definitely was pretty scary.
You just go up the ladder. Tom works at Kyle Busch Motorsports, where he now spends much of his time restoring a 1956 Chevrolet pickup truck, a vehicle he bought for Kyle when he was 8.
“We talked about fixing it up if we ever got caught up,” Tom said. The couple relocated from the cold winters of Schaumburg, Illinois, to the desert heat of Las Vegas.
The friendly matriarch with an easy laugh is one of only two mothers – along with Martha Labonte – to know what it is like to have not one, but two sons win NASCAR Sprint Cup championships.
Gaye and Tom Busch raised their boys, Kurt and Kyle, in Las Vegas, where they learned to race at various short tracks, including the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, before moving on to fulfill their destinies as motorsports superstars.
Now, Tom and I pick and choose which ones we go to, and we like to go out West because it’s nice and I love the weather. Soon, Busch was building his own cars and winning, and it seemed only proper that first Kurt and, several years later, Kyle followed suit.

Both made their racing names on the Bullring, a three-eighths-mile asphalt track located at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
“It’s been moved from building to building over the years. I used to do timing and scoring, but then they replaced us with the computer system. Will they help the crew get the car better? Grandma was there and I was there, and we’d just watch Tom race. You won a championship!” He goes, “Mom, where have you been?” It just didn’t sink in.
Basically, Kyle had my old car, and Kurt had Kurt’s car. Hence, she also played a major role in supporting and nourishing both Kurt and Kyle Busch’s careers.

“Two of them almost killed me, so there ain’t going to be a third one,” he said.

Kurt and Kyle praise their father for building the foundation that made them stars in one of the world’s top auto racing series.
“I think a lot of credit goes to Tom Busch for giving us the opportunities throughout life to be in the positions that we’ve been in and to have two championship caliber sons each and every year go into championship contention, and hopefully one of us can win it,” Kyle said.
Kurt said his father’s instructions from the days when the family raced together still ring true.
“He saw one of the races where I had a problem with the car, and I didn't get the best finish possible,” Kurt said.
I just want them to do their best.
