Disney is known for its stunning animated blockbusters, and the studio has not shied away from new releases over the past few years. Disney Is Still Behind The Times With LGBTQ+ Representation
Elsa's sexuality has been a topic of discussion since the release of Disney's Frozen in 2013.
Therefore, Raya and the Last Dragon is the first Walt Disney Animation Feature to have a transgender character. If the protocol at Disney remains in the way it has been presented, it may not be the last time. Frozen II brought back the debate when Disney failed to address if Elsa is gay despite an outcry from fans regarding clarification.
Tran added: "I think if you’re a person watching this movie and you see representation in a way that feels really real and authentic to you, then it is real and authentic. The lack of clarity on Disney's part shows they didn't learn from Frozen's Elsa, nor the obvious lack of LGBTQ+ representation.
Raya and the Last Dragon follows the fictional world of Kumandra, a kingdom comprised of five distinct regions based on Southeast Asian cultures.
